Bitcoin Mining Electricity Cost by State: Break-Even Hashprice

By SmartCryptoCalcs Editorial Team · EIA Electric Power Monthly, August 2026 YTD · Retrieved November 4, 2026

Key findings

  • Industrial electricity was cheapest in New Mexico (5.19¢/kWh) and most expensive in Hawaii (37.83¢/kWh), August 2026 YTD.
  • At 20 J/TH, one TH/s costs $0.025 a day to power in New Mexico and $0.182 in Hawaii: a miner needs at least that hashprice just to cover electricity.
  • At home (residential) rates the U.S. average is $0.087 per TH/s per day at 20 J/TH.
  • Industrial prices rose year over year in 47 of 51 states.

How the numbers are calculated

A mining machine's efficiency is quoted in joules per terahash (J/TH), which is the same as watts per TH/s of hashrate. Running one TH/s for a day therefore uses J/TH × 24 watt-hours. We priced that energy at each state's average retail electricity price from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (August 2026 YTD, Table 5.6.B), for residential and industrial customers, using the same power-cost formula as our mining profitability calculator. We show three efficiencies, 15, 20 and 30 J/TH, as reference points rather than specific machines.

The result is the power cost per TH/s per day, which is also the break-even hashprice for electricity alone. Mining revenue depends on Bitcoin's price and network difficulty, which change daily, so this page does not estimate profit. Hardware, cooling, pool fees and taxes are not included, and large miners usually pay negotiated rates below the state average.

Residential prices are higher than industrial ones in every state, which is why home mining needs a much higher hashprice to cover power. In North Dakota, the cheapest residential state, one TH/s at 20 J/TH costs $0.060 a day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which state has the cheapest electricity for Bitcoin mining?

New Mexico, at an average industrial price of 5.19¢ per kWh (August 2026 YTD, EIA). The most expensive was Hawaii at 37.83¢.

How much does electricity cost per terahash per day?

A machine using 20 joules per terahash draws 20 watts for every TH/s, or 0.48 kWh a day. At the U.S. average residential price of 18.19¢ that is $0.087 per TH/s per day; at the industrial average of 9.09¢ it is $0.044.

What hashprice does a miner need to break even on power?

Exactly the power cost per TH/s per day for their price and machine. The table lists it for 15, 20 and 30 J/TH machines in every state. Hardware, cooling, pool fees and taxes come on top.

Did electricity get more expensive this year?

Industrial prices were higher than a year earlier in 47 of 51 states (August 2026 YTD vs. August 2025 YTD).
